Jammu India, September 14, 2024: Seventy-five-year-old Rohingya refugee Lalu Bibi died in a sub-jail repurposed as a “holding center” for Rohingya detainees in Jammu, where she had been imprisoned since March 2021. Her death marks the seventh among Rohingya refugees in the facility, which continues to hold nearly 270 refugees in indefinite detention.
The exact cause of her death remains unconfirmed. Many detainees, including Bibi, possess refugee cards issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This week, UNHCR revealed that 676 Rohingya refugees are currently detained across India, with 608 of them held without any active court cases or pending sentences.
