Cox’s Bazar, September 13, 2024: Heavy Rains and Landslides Devastate Bangladesh Camps: Tragedy Strikes Camp-14
In the past two days, nonstop heavy rainfall has severely impacted the refugee camps in Bangladesh, causing widespread destruction and hardship. The torrential downpour has made life incredibly difficult for the residents, particularly at night when many are unable to find rest. Their makeshift homes, made of flimsy materials, have been ravaged by the relentless rain, leaving them exposed to the elements and forcing some to seek shelter elsewhere.
The situation took a tragic turn in Camp-14, Hakim Para, where a landslide occurred at midnight. The landslide completely destroyed several homes, including one where a family of three resided. Heartbreakingly, all three family members lost their lives in the incident. Their house was crushed under the force of the landslide, leaving no chance for survival.
The relentless rains have not only caused immediate damage but also raised fears of further landslides, flooding, and the spread of waterborne diseases in the camps. The residents, already living in dire conditions, are now facing additional layers of uncertainty and danger.
As the rains persist, the situation remains critical, with thousands of lives at risk. The tragedy at Camp-14 underscores the fragility of life in these camps, where displaced families struggle daily against natural disasters and harsh living conditions.##
