Talking Points
India should not deport Rohingya to Burma where they are stripped of citizenship, face violence, arrest, restrictions on movement and access to education and healthcare.India has until now respected the UNHCR mandate for refugees from Burma. It must continue to do so and not deport Rohingya.India must officially urge Burma to recognize the Rohingya minority, close IDP camps, restore all rights and integrate Rohingya back into public life.
Background
The Rohingya Muslims have been discriminated against for years in Burma but the past three decades have witnessed untold brutality and persecution. Twenty two Nobel Prize laureates, Yale and Queen Mary Law School’s have described the systemic violence they face as either “genocide”.
State-sanctioned oppression has resulted in mass internal displacement and thousands of Rohingya fleeing their ancestral homeland. The Rohingya seek shelter and refuge in neighboring countries, where unfortunately, they are often unwanted and denied sanctuary; too often they fall into the clutches of violent, criminal human traffickers.
What can we do for the Rohingya Muslim population?
We must not give up hope! We can be a voice for the Rohingya.
