Arakan Watch: September 3, 2026: The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), based in The Hague, Netherlands, ordered on August 31 that the Indus Waters Treaty, signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, should be reinstated. However, the Indian government has categorically rejected the order.<\/p>\n
The Indian government unilaterally suspended the water-sharing treaty in April 2025, accusing Pakistani nationals of involvement in an attack in the Kashmir region that killed 26 tourists. India also halted the flow of water to Pakistan.<\/p>\n
Pakistan, meanwhile, has denied that its nationals were involved in the attack and accused India of using the Kashmir dispute as a pretext to suspend the water-sharing arrangement.<\/p>\n
Under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, India and Pakistan agreed to share the rivers and water resources of the Indus river system. Pakistan relies on these rivers to supply water to nearly 80 percent of its agricultural land.<\/p>\n
The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled that India has a full obligation to comply with the provisions of the treaty and should not terminate or suspend it. The court also ordered the Indian government to restrict construction activities on the Ratle Hydroelectric Project in Kashmir.<\/p>\n
However, in a statement, India\u2019s Ministry of External Affairs said: \u201cIndia categorically rejects the decision of this so-called Court of Arbitration, which has no jurisdiction whatsoever in this matter. The Court has no authority to adjudicate on India\u2019s sovereign decisions.\u201d India therefore firmly rejected the arbitration court\u2019s order.<\/p>\n
