Shin Moe Myint\/The Myanmar Times<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-separator\">\u00a0<span class=\"news-author\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmtimes.com\/author\/chan-mya-htwe\">CHAN MYA HTWE<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"news-date\">12 SEP 2019<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-separator\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-pane pane-dfp-pane no-title block\">\u00a0<strong>The government has approved the upgrade of a local airport in Thandwe, Rakhine State to international status, said U Kyaw Aye Thein, Rakhine State Planning and Finance Minister.\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-pane pane-node-content no-title block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner clearfix\">\n<div class=\"block-content\">\n<article id=\"node-112066\" class=\"node node-news article odd node-lang-en node-full clearfix\">\n<div class=\"node-content\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden view-mode-full\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>The decision was made at the Union level after the Rakhine State Government submitted the request to upgrade, he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"block-block-37--2\" class=\"block block-block no-title even block-count-4 block-region-block-inject-adv-3 block-37\"><\/div>\n<p>The authorities were responding to private sector demand for the airport to be able to receive international flights from Europe. \u201cMany investors and businessmen from Europe want to travel directly to Ngapali for meetings with the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and other promotional events,\u201d U Kyaw Aye Thein said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><\/div>\n<p>He added that with more direct international flights able to land in Thandwe, opportunities for Rakhine tourism would spike, supporting state efforts to draw more tourists to the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJob opportunities will emerge on the back of further development of the tourism sector, leading to economic growth and regional stability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 31 local airports in Myanmar, proposals to upgrade and renovate 14 for the purpose of bettering tourism were submitted and approved over the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Department of Civil Aviation started a tender process for the upgrading of Kawthoung airport in Tanintharyi Region and is now calling for requests for proposals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"block-block-32--2\" class=\"block block-block block-inject-adv no-title even block-count-3 block-region-block-inject-adv-5 block-32\"><\/div>\n<p>Kawthoung airport is one of 14 airports earmarked for upgrades to promote tourism and boost regional development. It was among the first three to be chosen for the upgrades, the others being Heho airport in Shan State and Mawlamyine airport in Mon State.<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><\/div>\n<p>The upgrades would involve setting up customs, immigration and quarantine facilities in the first stage and then bringing in other facilities to raise it to international status in the second stage.<\/p>\n<p>The KBZ Group won the tender for Heho airport, where the investment has been estimated at US$40 million. The company would invest 65pc, with the remainder to be invested by Japan\u2019s Toyota Tsusho Co.
