Arakan Watch, August, 30, 2026: Canada calls on all parties to immediately de-escalate violence, allow and facilitate the unimpeded passage of humanitarian assistance across the country, and prioritize the protection of civilians.
In a press statement, released on the occasion of 9th Anniversary of the Myanmar military’s attack on Rohingya, dated 25th August 2026, stated that “As we observe the ninth anniversary of the 2017 attack on Rohingya, Canada pays tribute to the survivors and families affected and commends the resilience and courage of Rohingya communities in the face of continued hardships. Canada recognizes that Rohingya voices must be at the centre of decisions that affect their lives and futures.”
Statement also stated that “Canada remains deeply concerned by the continued deterioration of the human rights and humanitarian situation in Rakhine State and across Myanmar. This includes escalating conflict, airstrikes affecting civilians, renewed displacement, restrictions on movement, the obstruction of humanitarian assistance, forced conscription and labour of Rohingya and other ethnic minorities by armed actors in the conflict. Conditions for the voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of refugees and forcibly displaced persons remain absent, with prospects for such conditions more remote than ever. Rohingya remain stateless and one of the world’s most persecuted groups. In 2025, more than 6,500 Rohingya fled Myanmar by dangerous routes, marking the deadliest year for maritime movements. These irregular maritime movements of Rohingya refugees are a direct consequence of persecution, statelessness, and restrictions on access to livelihoods in the absence of sustainable solutions in Rakhine State.
According to Mohammad Sadek, a Rohingya Front Line Defender, Canada has already contributed $7000 millions for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and have welcomed huge numbers of Rohingya refugees to Canada under resettlement program. I believe that Canada’s initiative and calls for the protection of Rohingya is timely and that would be pivotal to ensure a durable solution.
I express my sincere thanks to the people and the Government of Canada for supporting Rohingya, he further said.
“We expect that Canada shall consider the resettlement of Rohingya Refugees from Malaysia who have been struggling in sub-human condition and under modern salvation in 3D work sectors” – Dangerous, Difficult and Dirty) for over generations, expressed by Abdul Kudus from Arakan Mayyu Organisation for Development (AMOD), based in Canada.
Mohd Jalal, a veteran Rohingya activist said, I have been languishing in Malaysia for last 50 years. My eldest child age is now 44 years. But, I still holding the card of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). I don’t have any particular income source for survival and even to have basic medication. I am not sure what is going to happen for me and for my vulnerable Rohingya people. So, I believe that initiative of Malaysian Government to communicate with refugee resettlement countries, especially Canada, United Kingdom and Australia for the resettlement of Rohingya would be very effective to finding a durable solution.
I appreciate Malaysian Government, all levels of authorities and entire neitizens for understanding Rohingya crisis and providing humanitarian supports to our people, he also said. ##
